The first two competitions (2001 and 2004) were organised within the annual summer academy of chamber music Musical July on the Coast which was maintained by the Koper Music School. In 2007 the competition changed its location to the Ljubljana Vič-Rudnik Music School and its name to Primož Ramovš Competition for Chamber Music Groups. The 4th Primož Ramovš Competition in 2012 was organised under the auspices of Radio-Television Slovenia (RTV Slovenia) and the Society of Slovene Composers in the Ljubljana Music and Ballet Conservatory. Its artistic director has always been Tomaž Lorenz.
The competition is today run in three age categories: up to the average age of 20, 25, or 30 years. Groups in each age category must play two obligatory pieces: one work of a Slovene artist and one work from a world composer.
