Founded in 1984, Fru Fru Puppet Theatre is a repertory puppet theatre, producing performances based on communication with children through a combination of puppetry, acting, and live music. Now based at House of Children and Arts, Fru Fru Puppet Theatre is the vehicle for the work of Irena Rajh, Marjan Kunaver, and Ana Špik, although the theatre co-operates with numerous visual artists, puppet makers, and directors. Its productions have been presented widely in Slovenia and abroad and have received many awards.

Background

Fru Fru Puppet Theatre was founded by student puppeteers who worked at Pionirski dom (Pioneer Home) with Lojze Kovačič as their tutor and produced several small-scale mobile performances that toured kindergartens and schools. Later on, the ensemble (which then included Mateja Bizjak, Ava Lokošek, Irena Rajh, and Andreja Hočevar) fell apart. However, in 1992 Irena Rajh established a family puppet theatre troupe with her husband Marjan Kunaver, reviving the Fru Fru name.

Fru Fru Puppet Theatre collaborates with numerous puppet makers, such as Igor Cvetko, Marko A. Kovačič, Marina Hrovatin, puppetry directors, such as Jelena Sitar, Jan Zakonjšek, Mateja Bizjak, musicians, visual and puppet artists, and writers. Fru Fru also collaborates extensively with House of Children and Arts, Zapik Theatre and Konj Puppet Theatre.

Performances

In 2005 Fru Fru Theatre produced the performance based on W. Holzwarth's The Story of the Little Mole Who Went in Search of Whodunit [Krtek Zlatko ali kakec, ki je padel z neba], which was awarded at the Slovene Puppetry Biennial in 2007, and in 2006 the interpretation of the story Goldilocks and the Three Bears [Zlatolaska in trije medvedi], co-produced by Glej Theatre, which received an award for best direction at the Summer Puppet Pier Festival, Maribor, in 2008.

In August 2007 Fru Fru Theatre produced the mini festival Labyrinth of Moments, an interactive instant street theatre event, on 4 stages set up within a labyrinth-type setting in a tent. During the day children were encouraged to find the performance of their liking, while in the evening the same challenge was offered to adults. Along with 10 Slovene puppetry groups – including Konj Puppet Theatre, Teatro matita, and Papelito Puppet Theatre – 7 puppetry groups from Slovakia, Italy, Belgium, France, and Germany presented their plays. The first venue for the "labyrinth" was Tivoli Park in Ljubljana, following which the structure was set at the city square in Maribor within the framework of the Summer Puppet Pier Festival. Labyrinth of Moments was presented in 2008 at the Edinburgh Festival and in 2009 in Reims, France.

Fru Fru's productions have appeared also in at the international festival in Ieper, Belgium, at the Festival Bielsko-Biala in Poland, at the International Puppet Festival PIF in Zagreb, Croatia, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where Fru Fru's production of Ela Peroci's story My Umbrella Can Be a Baloon Too [Moj dežnik je lahko balon] (1996) was awarded as the best children's performance in 1999. In 2009, Fru Fru's production of Sleeping Beauty [Trnuljčica] (2008) was awarded at the 5th Slovene Puppetry Biennial.
