Launched in 1985, the Golden Stick Festival is a biannual festival of performing arts for children and young people. Intended to promote children and youth theatre production, it presents the best Slovenian theatre, puppet, music, dance, and experimental performances. It also features international performances and round tables. The festival devotes special attention to the development of special accompanying pedagogical materials.

Golden Stick is organised by the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, the Slovenian Theatre Institute and the Cankarjev dom, Cultural and Congress Centre and presents the Little Golden Stick Awards.

Background and creed

Initially organised by the Theatre for Children and Youth (GOML) at the Španski borci Culture Centre, in 2009 the festival was taken over by the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre, taking place in different locations in Ljubljana, besides the Ljubljana Puppet Theatre also Cankarjev dom, Mini Theatre, Dance Theatre Ljubljana and Slovene National Theatre Drama Ljubljana.

One of the festival’s goals is also to present the best of Slovene production to foreign theatre professionals and to maintain and develop relations with local educational institutions. The festival is also acting as a platform for pedagogues who select contents for kindergartens and schools.

The festival has hosted numerous international theatres, such as Centre Dramatique National d’Alsace, France, Showtheater Holbæk from Denmark, La Baracca Theatre – Testoni Ragazzi from Bologna (IT), Thalias Kompagnons Theater from Nuernberg (DE), and Mala scena Zagreb (CR), City Theatre for the Young GKM Split (CR), Teatret Lampe from Copenhagen (DK), Det Lille Verdens Teater from Virum (DK), Little Theatre Duško Radović from Belgrade (RS), etc.

Part of the festival's programme is included in Mapping. A map on the aesthetics of performing arts for early years, an international artistic research project focused on creating a sensory-based relationship with very young children, from 0 to 6 years, through performing arts.

Golden Stick platform

The festival is enriched with the Golden Stick (Zlata paličica) platform, organised in the frame of the Gleda(l)išče project, operated by the Slovenian Theatre Institute. It provides a comprehensive web-based environment that lists recommended, high-quality theatre performances for children and youth and recommended arts and cultural education content in the field of theatre. The platform is actively supported by partnerships between the educational institutions and creators.
