The collecting of literature begun in 1821 when Kranjski deželni muzej (Carniolian provincial museum) was established in Ljubljana. Today a complete book stock of monographs and periodical volumes is approximately 15.000 units. The library also owns rare material from the 18th and 19th Century. Since 1998 the library is a part of COBISS - Slovene Virtual Library. The Library keeps natural sciences material (geology, paleontology, mineralogy, biology, botany, zoology, entomology, ornithology) and general literature. Newer entomological literature is kept at the entomological department and counts over 600 monographs. The Museum publishes a periodical publication Scopolia twice a year with articles on botany, zoology, museology, geology and paleontology. The Library sends it out to institutions all over the world in exchange for their periodicals. The museum is also a co-publisher of journal Acta entomologica Slovenica, published since 1993. All museum periodical publications as well as exhibition catalogues are available at the Library.
