In 2009 the first Slovenia Press Photo Festival (SPP) took place in the National Gallery of Slovenia (in 2010 it moved to Cankarjev dom, Cultural and Congress Centre). This competitive festival was established by the SPP Institute for Promotion of Photography in order to promote press and documentary photography in Slovenia.

With winners selected by an international jury of prominent experts (Christopher Morris, Adriana Zehbrauskas, Murad Sezer, Oded Balilty, and Heidi Levine in 2010), the national level competition concludes with an exhibition of the awarded works. It is accompanied by an overview exhibition of a renowned international press agency (in 2009 the Associated Press, in 2010 Sipa Press with the works by Göksin Sipahioglu, its founder), thematic exhibition (War VII by VII Photo Agency), lectures and courses.

The festival awards the work (individual photographs or a story comprised of 3 to 10 photos) in the following sections: News, People, Sports, Entertainment & Culture, and Nature & Environment.

In 2009 the exhibition of the awarded works travelled also to the gallery in the Sevnica Castle, in 2010, however, the exhibition of 58 selected photographs took place in New York, Tel Aviv and Istanbul.
