France Bevk Goriška Library performs the tasks of regional library for the Goriška Region. The library was founded in 1949 in Nova Gorica, close to the Italian border. During the 1990s the library became an important information centre, a function which was further enhanced in 2000 when it moved into a new modern building.

The library currently has 47 offline and 16 online computers for users. The oldest volume in its collection is Jurij Dalmatin’s Bible, which dates from 1584. Some older collections (the National Liberation War collection, manuscripts, maps and the music collection, as well as writer France Bevk’s heritage collection) are yet to be preserved. The library has branches in Bilje, Branik, Deskle, Kanal, Prvačina, Renče and Solkan, and since 1971 it has also run a mobile library service.

Cross-border cooperation

France Bevk Library Gorica co-operates with libraries in Italian Gorica and in Udine, constituting an important part of the Alps-Adriatic libraries network. In 2000 it hosted an international workshop on The Role of Public Libraries in Local Communities in co-operation with the Ministry of Culture and Municipality of Nova Gorica. The library is gradually developing a new academic function (developing new methods) as part of its remit in co-operation with the University of Primorska. It is also collaborating with Udine Public Library in the joint project Film v knjižnici (‘Movie in a Library’).
