Taking contemporary dance and performing arts as but a starting point, the Federacija Institute is a peculiar production house. Established in 2009, it is a means to experiment in running various artistic enterprises as artistically potent and socially innovative as possible. The aim is to refresh and rejuvenate the formats of performance practices, but also to serve as a collective platform for the wider arts scene, offering organisational, artistic and production support.

In 2013 the collective absorbed (or merged with) the Kolektiv Narobov, with whom they also organise the Naked Stage International Improvisational Theatre Festival. A significant part of the programme, complementing their stage performances, is represented by workshops for children and youth, exploring dance and movement.

Background

The institute was founded by the artists Gregor Kamnikar, Andreja Podrzavnik, and Snježana Premuš as a continuation of the activities of the OPS! Institute, established in 1997. Exploring new strategies of contemporary art production, OPS! was collaborated with Dance Studio Intakt, the Intima Virtual Base, the Gibanica (Moving Cake) Festival of Slovene Dance, Cankarjev dom, the Priden Možic Cultural Association, the Slovene Puppetry Biennial – and participated in a number of international projects with, for example, the Drama Theatre Pazardžik (BG), the Theatre of New Forms (BG), the Touch of Dutch Festival (NL), the Theatre in a Suitcase (BG), the Welser Figurentheaterfestival (AT), and the Festival of Children's Theatres (RS).

Projects

As its first project, Federacija presented the exhibition Project Darinka Novak, which featured documentary materials of events (interactive installations) that actually never took place. Darinka Novak was a performative project spanning a period of three years (2007–2010) which analysed the socio-political context and personal motives that allow or prevent the development of certain forms of artistic expression through various actions, workshops, discussions, and meetings. Darinka Novak was concluded with a publication published by Federacija entitled The Book [Knjiga], which included documentation about this performative event and other contributions. The exhibition was co-produced by Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture and Aksioma Institute.

A curious collaboration happened in 2011, when Gregor Kamnikar collaborated with the Slovene-based Japanese artist Ryuzo Fukuhara. In February the two toured Japan as part of the longterm project Ecollectiv [Tkolektivnos] which examined improvisation in art and everyday life. Another project in that year was the project 39 Exercises for Dying, a series of 39 dance performances by the 39-year-old dance artist Gregor Kamnikar, each lasting 39 minutes. The project was conceived as a farewell to the artist and his artistic identity.

Together with the Maska Institute Federacija published a book Collective improvisation from Theater to Film and Beyond, written by Sonja Vilč.

Workshops

Federacija runs a number of different workshops for various age groups. They span from exploring dance in museums to presenting various correspondences between voice and movement.

The institute collaborates with the Plesna izba - Maribor Dance Room and the Celje Dance Forum on an inter-generational project of artistic collaboration.

International activities

In the Should I stay or should I go? project, 5 theatre companies from Austria, France, Germany, Slovenia and Sweden collectively created performances, workshops, a book and a feature film surrounding the question why people are staying in or leaving a place. It was conducted by five partner organisations: Die Gorillas (DE), Stockholms Improvisationsteater (SE), Combats Absurdes (FR), Theater im Bahnhof Graz (AT) and Kolektiv Narobov, represented by the organisation Zavod Federacija Ljubljana (SI).

Another project, starting in 2014, was called Dynamic Spaces Project: "We inhabit different sensory worlds: experience as it is perceived through one set of culturally patterned sensory screens is quite different from experiences perceived through another. The architectural and urban environments that people create are expressions of this filtering-screening process.” .
