Mission and projects
A successor to the former Open Society Institute - Slovenia programme, and its new media department led by Mitja Doma, Ljudmila has grown into a well-equipped digital media lab that focuses on digital production as well as education, research and development of hardware and software. It also provides knowledge, equipment, Internet access, websites, electronic publishing and other affordable networking services to non-governmental and non-profit organisations, art collectives, active individuals and others.
One of the most significant art projects of Ljudmila, developed in the cooperation with V2 (the Institute for the Unstable Media, Rotterdam) and planty of other supporters and funders, is the project Frida V. (Free Ride Data Acquisiton Vehicle) - the work of media artist Luka Frelih, also one of the founding members of Ljudmila, and currently its artistic director and also the leader of the Creative Commons Slovenia. Frida V. is a free mapping interface for bicycles he first built for DEAF 2004 and has been developing further since then. The rugged and comfortable bicycle equipped for efficient exploration and mapping of public urban spaces that cariess small computer, GPS positioning device, 802.11 wireless network transciever and a basic audiovisual recording unit, has been realized and presented in numerous cities all over the world; Ljubljana, Rotterdam, New York, München, Bergen, Beijing, etc. In 2009 a new all-in-1 Frida Box prototype series was developed, built and ridden in Paris, France. In the beginning of 2010 Frida V. was exhibited within the exhibition Three electromagnetic habitats in the KiBela Art Space (Maribor) which was also showing another work of Frelih and Robertina Šebjanič, developed under the support of Ljudmila as well. In april 2010 Frida V. will be presented on the Linuxwochen in Linz, Österreich.
As the latest project, Ljudmila roofs also the project Culture.si offering information on Slovene cultural producers, venues, festivals and support services, all in one place. Supported by the Slovene The Ministry of Culture, it is realized in the cooperation with external executants.
Cooperations
Ljudmila operates through KUD France Prešeren Arts and Culture Association and is a member of the European Cultural Backbone (ECB) initiative and the regional media centre network 'A.Network', as well as being a founding member of the M3C Multimedia Centres Network of Slovenia. As a public lead for the Creative Commons Slovenia project Ljudmila is also a member of the Creative Commons and Communia international networks.
Artist-in-residence
The residency programme in November and December 2009 was produced by Ljudmila and MoTA- Museum of Transitory Art with help of CodeEp. Nedine Kachornnamsong (Thailand/Sweden) received her M.Sc. in IT Product Design in Denmark and completed her MFA at Valand School of Fine Arts, Sweden with her specialization in new media. By conducting research-in-practice with a focus on social interaction, spatial condition and tangibility, her works reveal a state of contemporary. Currently, she is working on questions related to possible integration of online representation and experience into a physical environment. In December Nedine Kachornnamsong gave a Digital dish lecture Monitor and Display: an image of the Ghost in the Machine at Ljudmila, while her Yes/No/Maybe interactive installation and a social event (transforming online dating elements into the physical setting) took place at Ljubljana Museum of Modern Art.
Awards
In 2004 the Ljudmila as the Slovene epicentre of the digital creation for group projects and autonomous artists and reasearchers was bestowed with the Golden Bird Award, the section of the new media.
