One of the pioneers of modern Slovenian graphic arts Miha Maleš (1903–1987) donated 2,600 of his works to the town of Kamnik. Thus, in 1979, a gallery bearing his name was opened in a renovated burgher house at 2 Glavni trg in Kamnik. Since then, the Miha Maleš Gallery exhibits his works in two floors and occasionally prepares exhibitions placing his work in the context of other artists and phenomena.

One of the central, versatile personalities of Slovenian fine art, Miha Maleš is a big name in Slovenian art history. Besides being an academic painter and printmaker, he was also a great collector of works of art, the initiator and leader of Četrta generacija (the fourth generation art group), an art organiser, poet, editor and publicist. In 1977, he received the Grand Prešeren Award.

Collection

The gallery collection contains all of Maleš's print works and a selection of his paintings and other materials. The paintings are presented in occasional exhibitions and accompanying catalogues. A selection of works is displayed from different periods of the artist's life, techniques and themes.

Programme

Besides the collection, Miha Maleš Gallery occasionally also features exhibitions that systematically present monographic researches of local artists who have not yet had solo exhibitions. Between 2007 and 2009, in cooperation with Pilon Gallery and Maribor Art Gallery, the gallery prepared a series of exhibitions exposing women artists who were creating between 1918 and 1945 in Slovenia. Painters and sculptors such as Henrika Šantel, the younger Avgusta Šantel, Helena Vurnik, Anica Sodnik Zupanec, Elda Piščanec, Mira Pregelj and Bara Remec were presented. The exhibition was also featured in the gallery of project partners.
