In 2009 the City Museum of Ljubljana and the City Art Gallery Ljubljana merged into a new public institute the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana. The merger was part of Ljubljana Urban Municipality's cultural development plans for 2008–2011, endorsed in June 2008.

Beside the City Museum of Ljubljana and its unit the Ščit - Conservatory Centre of the City Museum of Ljubljana the new institute now manages its former 4 dislocated facilities (Vžigalica Gallery, Jakopič Gallery, Tobacco Museum in the former Tobacco Factory complex on Tržaška cesta, and the Memorial Room of Writer Ivan Cankar on Rožnik Hill) as well as another 4 facilities which were previously managed by the City Art Gallery Ljubljana: two spaces of the former City Art Gallery Ljubljana, one at Mestni trg 5 (the main exhibiting space and former headquarters of the City Art Gallery Ljubljana) and the second at Cankarjevo nabrežje 11/1), and both spaces in Bežigrad, namely the Bežigrajska galerija 1 and 2.

The goal of combining the museums and galleries under one leadership is to maintain the established mission of each while improving individual concepts of each institution.

Novelties planned for the end of 2010/beginning of 2011

Indeed in the end of 2010 the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana are planning some changes: the space of the City Art Gallery Ljubljana on Cankarjevo nabrežje 11/1 will be closed, but a new house of 350 m2 in the complex of Tobacco Factory will open. The smaller part of the house is going to present the collection of the Tobacco Museum Collection, the larger part will be the space for presentations of contemporary art projects. The house will also offer the very first artist residency in Ljubljana, where approximately 4 foreign artists per year will be chosen after by a public call. Beside AiR Celeia Celje – the artist-in-residence programme in Celje, the residency in Ljubljana will be the second possibility for foreign artists and curators to come to Slovenia to gather inspirations, knowledge and contacts.
