Brežice Library was established in 1946. It moved to its present location in 1980, while its premises were expanded and modernized in the period 2002–2006. In addition to its central space, the Brežice Library has two movable book collections – at Pišece and at the military barracks in Cerklje ob Krki.
On the ground floor a children literature department is located next to theMini Bologna, a permanent exhibition of illustrated youth books from 44 countries. On the upper floor there is a section for adults, a reference library, and a permanent book collection of the Slovenian language expert Jože Toporišič.
The Brežice Library has been selected by NAPLE (National Authorities on Public Libraries in Europe) for presentation in the Library Buildings database that presents the cutting-edge contemporary library buildings in Europe.
Brežice Library is a public library that engages in educational, entertainment, cultural and information activities for people in the Municipality of Brežice. In 2008 it had 5,749 members and its collection comprised 104,319 items. The library has introduced a self-service book borrowing machine.
A multi-purpose hall is named after Savica Zorko, the library’s first manager. Many events (book readings, presentations, exhibitions, etc.) for children and adults take place here. The events organised in 2008 had 6,739 visitors. In 2010 the library started offering also free computer courses.
