Based at the offices of the Science and Research Centre of Koper (SRC Koper), the Historical Society of Southern Primorska, Koper undertakes research and scholarship into the history of the Southern Primorska region. Since the establishment in 1989 it has published first as original publisher, later in co-operation with the Annales Publishing House, the journals Annales Journal and Acta Histriae, as well as many other monographies or articles on the history of Istria and the Mediterranean region.

The society laid the foundation for the establishment of the Science and Research Centre of Koper (SRC Koper) later in 1994 and consequently also for the University of Primorska in 2003. It co-operates with the Union of Historical Societies of Slovenia and with other affiliated associations in Slovenia and abroad. Its president is from the beginning onward Salvator Žitko, also the former head of the Koper Regional Museum.
