Celica ("Cell") Hostel is situated in the centre of Ljubljana within the former military complex of Metelkova, which was developed during the 1990s into the Metelkova mesto Autonomous Cultural Zone, an alternative culture territory with a very distinctive architecture and numerous clubs, studios and galleries. The former military prison was turned into a hostel with 20 rooms that were renovated by more than 80 Slovene and foreign artists (among them Anthony Gormley and Giovanni Morbin), which were invited by the Sestava Society.
Opened in 2003, the hostel is now run by Šouhostel Institute, a non-profit organisation established by the Student Organisation of the University of Ljubljana. Celica has received multiple awards, among them being the title of the 'No.1 hippest hostel in the world' given by Lonely Planet. Besides its unique rooms, the hostel boasts a gallery, a small museum, a special room to chill and meditate, and a green outside garden, where during the summer music concerts often take place.
Art programmes
Besides being located in the centre of Ljubljana's cultural happenings, the hostel itself is also a venue for various cultural events: a jam session by Slovene and foreign musicians takes place every Tuesday, and a literary event or concert on Friday. Concerts are organised either indoor or at its summer garden, where each start of June, the Godibodi Festival also takes place.
Celica Hostel's a small exhibition space, Srečišče ("Meeting Point") Gallery, hosts monthly art exhibitions featuring work by both established and emerging artists. Most of Celica's events and exhibitions are organised by KUD Sestava, though some other institutions also tend to set up their programmes there.
