The Music Programme of Cankarjev dom Cultural and Congress Centre presents a rich assortment of different music events, including classical music of all styles, from symphonic to chamber, staged musical projects, and jazz, ethno and contemporary music concerts, all characterised by high quality and a contemporary and international spirit. The stage of Cankarjev dom's Gallus Hall meets high technical standards, thus facilitating both orchestral concerts and large-scale operatic and ballet productions, both touring productions and those prepared in co-production with Slovene national opera houses. With its excellent acoustics it is generally considered the best symphonic stage in Slovenia.

Orchestral and chamber music

Programmes include regular orchestral subscription series featuring the Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra, the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra and foreign visiting orchestras, chamber music subscription series, larger opera productions, a festival of contemporary music (Predihano), and other occasional concerts.

Symphonic concerts are organised regularly. The Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra presents Cankarjev dom's Blue and Orange Season Subscription Series, while the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra stages 9 concerts in its symphonic cycle. Both orchestras also hold over 20 concerts for young audiences, provided with a commentary, in cooperation with Ljubljana Musical Youth and the Slovene branch of Jeunesses Musicales International (JMI). Especially popular are the concerts performed within Cankarjev dom's Golden Season Subscription Series, which embrace world-renowned visiting international orchestras (Vienna Philharmonics, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Symphonic Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, Staatskapelle Dresden, Gawandhaus Orchestra Leipzig, Philharmonia Orchestra) with prominent conductors (L. Maazel, R. Chailly, L. Bernstein, S. Celibidache, S. Bychkov, J. E. Gardiner, K. Masur, F. Luisi, S. Rattle) and the most sought-after vocal and instrumental soloists of our time.

Cankarjev dom's chamber music programme is presented within the Silver Season Subscription Series – these concerts are often given in the halls of the Slovene Philharmonics. Some chamber concerts and pipe organ concerts are held in Gallus Hall, mostly guest appearances by particularly compelling music figures. The annual Sound of Six Strings Series also features 4 evenings of guitar music in the Slovene Philharmonics Hall, while Cankarjev dom's programme also includes different chamber concerts by Slovene musicians for non-subscribers.

The Predihano Series of New Music is devoted to contemporary music practices and to presenting the most important musical works written after the Second World War. The last series presented the music of the composers of the so-called spectral school, in 2011 the series will bring light to the Italian composer Luigi Nono. The concerts in the series are often commented and prepared by local or foreign musicians.

Opera

One opera production per year is staged in Gallus Hall, which provides better technical possibilities than the smaller stages of the Slovene national opera houses. Mostly these productions are co-productions with the Slovene National Theatre Opera and Ballet Ljubljana and/or the Slovene National Theatre Maribor. In recent years the most notable event was the first performance of Offenbach's romantic opera Rhine Nymphs.

Vocal music

Vocal music is represented in concerts by Slovene groups and guest appearances by foreign choirs or vocal groups given in Gallus Hall or in the halls of the Slovene Philharmonics. A regular annual concert is held by the Academic Choir Tone Tomšič, and other Slovene vocal groups appear occasionally.

Rock, jazz, ethno and experimental music

The genres of rock, jazz, ethno, experimental and different fusions of these genres are presented within the series Tuesday Clubbing. Every year a Jazz festival is organised at Cankarjev dom, featuring some of the most important international jazz musicians.

Cankarjev dom also regularly features groups that are dedicated to upholding the Slovene folklore tradition. Gallus Hall hosts the regular annual concert of the France Marolt Academic Folklore Group, as well as other folklore groups. The Music Programme of Cankarjev dom regularly involves guest appearances by foreign folklore groups and has introduced Slovene audiences to the rich tradition of world folk cultures.
