History

The first state music school was established at Ljubljana Dome in 1807, but this was later closed. Only with the establishment of the Music School at the Philharmonic Society (1821-1919) did Slovenia acquire its first music school with a modern curriculum. The first Yugoslav Conservatorium was founded in 1919 and in 1939 this became the Academy of Music. In 1953 the secondary programme split from the Academy to become an independent institution, now the Ljubljana Music and Ballet Secondary School.

Programme

The Academy of Music now comprises Departments of Music Performance and Instruments, Conducting, Composition, Singing and Opera School, Church Music and Music Teacher Training.

Projects

International cooperation

The University of Ljubljana facilitates student exchange according to the programmes of CEEPUS (Central European Exchange Programme), Leonardo da Vinci and bilateral agreements. The Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra regularly participates at Young Euro Classics, the international festival of the best European youth orchestras, organised in Germany.
