Established in 1946 Brežice Library is a public library that engages in educational, entertainment, cultural and information activities for people in the Municipality of Brežice. In 1980 it moved to its present location, which was later expanded and modernised in the period 2002–2006. In addition to its central space, the Brežice Library has two movable book collections – at Pišece and at the military barracks in Cerklje ob Krki.
The Brežice Library has been selected by the organisation NAPLE (National Authorities on Public Libraries in Europe) for presentation in the Library Buildings database which features cutting-edge contemporary library buildings in Europe.
In 2008 Brežice Library had 5,749 members and its collection comprised 104,319 items. The library has also introduced a self-service book borrowing machine.
On the ground floor a children's literature department is located next to the Mini Bologna, a permanent exhibition of illustrated youth books from 44 countries. On the upper floor there is a section for adults, a reference library, and the permanent display of the book collection of the Slovene language expert Jože Toporišič.
A multi-purpose hall is named after Savica Zorko, the library's first manager. Many events (book readings, presentations, exhibitions, etc.) for children and adults take place here. The events organised in 2008 had 6,739 visitors. In 2010 the library started offering free computer courses.
