The Museum of Slovenian Independence, established in 2021, is the most recent national museum. Its first exhibition was dedicated to Jože Pučnik (1932–2003), sociologist and former dissident who contributed to political changes in Slovenia from the late 1980s. In 2023 the museum was merged with the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia and reestablished again in 2026.

Musealisation of Slovenian independence

In 1991 the Republic of Slovenia declared independence from the Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia which was followed by the Ten-days war with the Yugoslav People's Army. The period of political and economic transition from the late 1980s has been researched by a number of museums throughout the country. The main collections and displays can be found in the National Museum of Contemporary History of Slovenia, Celje Museum of Recent History, Maribor National Liberation Museum, and the Museum of Slovene Police.
