Since 1998 KiBela Art Space has operated as a regular, programme-oriented gallery which goes beyond traditional exhibiting boundaries in Slovenia because it connects various visual media ventures with audio communications, telecommunications, interactive technology, contemporary dance and theatre. Kibela has worked towards establishing links between alternative and established art and culture, between young and older generations, between the domestic and foreign art scene, between classical and electronic media, between art, technology and science and between different aesthetics and thinking. The gallery collaborates with Slovene artists and institutions as well as with similar organisations in Graz, London, Zagreb, Belgrade and the United States, presenting new approaches through intermedia as well as classic fine arts. Its high quality technical and professional qualities mean that Kibela is well equipped and wired and can occupy a unique role, not only in Maribor but also in Slovenia as a whole. Kibela has already published numerous catalogues and books and is currently developing its own archive of CDs, CD-ROMs, VCDs and DVDs to accompany its exhibitions and other artistic events.

==Background==
KiBela Art Space presents contemporary Maribor-based artists throughout Slovenia and (through Kibela distribution channels) around the world. It communicates with other local centres in Slovenia and has presented the work of numerous foreign artists including Eduardo Kac, Simon Biggs and Stelarc through its international contemporary arts network. Kibela's access to the worldwide terrain is made possible through its web pages, through its publication TOX edition, and through activities by its curator, eg at the Webby Awards in San Francisco.

KiBela Art Space has an exclusive approach to installing art in the space: various art aesthetics in space being such by content or by media that artists use in a creative way. KiBela archive includes social art openings, performances, presentations and other art events, that are installed in a classical way or as high technological settings and architecturaly challenging projects.

In KiBela, space for art, hundreds of exhibitions, performances, presentations and other artistic events have taken place since 1999, in both traditional, as well as advanced technological set-ups.

Background

KiBela hall is on the ground floor of Narodni dom and was rennovated in January 1999 with the purpose of installing visual and other forms of art. Otherwise the KiBela programme has been running since the year 1996 when Multimedia Center Kibla has been established. In the second half of the 90's plans for KiBela have begun to take form with the help of experience and common knowledge-in a time when emergence of new technologies and art approaches has already become self-evident and necessary when planning a contemporary gallery.

Concept

KiBela incorporates a spectrum of different ideas, methods and visions that coexist in art. The creativity of traditional media is important to enrich electronic ones, but all in the context of historical continuity of visual art, in the sense of a bigger aesthetization and integration of electronic media and principles in art.

Programme

The gallery collaborates and presents the recent works of multimedia and visual artists following the curated programme of house and external, freelance curators. The list of artists who have been presented at KiBela reads like a who's who in contemporary art and especially, new media art. Pioneer and innovative artists who are at the forefront of new media art, whether from abroad or from Slovenia, have been exhibited alongside young and emerging artists. Since 2004 all of KiBela's events – more than 100 – are documented on KiBela's online archive.

KiBela is also a multi-purpose space for organising seminars, presentations, round tables, press conferences and rich cultural programmes, including theatre performances, video projections, concerts, literary readings, debate clubs, etc.

International cooperation

As Kibla is extensively involved in international cooperation projects, KiBela Art Space also participates internationally by providing an exhibition space for presentations – and has been attending international art fairs.

Location and exhibition space

KiBela is on the ground floor of Narodni dom Maribor and was renovated in January 1999 with the purpose of installing visual and other forms of art. KiBela cooperates often with other spaces and institutions and sometimes prepares site-specific projects.

  • dimensions: 132m² (8.7m x 15.2m x 3.5m H) vaulted space with 6 columns, incorporating 20 linear metres of wall space
  • installation system: hammer-and-nail installation, sculpture pedestals
  • lighting: halogen lighting system
  • climate control: none
  • sales policy: sales not permitted
