The SNG Maribor Symphony Orchestra consists of musicians from the Slovene National Theatre Maribor. It is a regular opera orchestra but gives also symphonic concerts.

The orchestra plays all the opera performances of the SNG Maribor Opera ensemble. Since 2005 the orchestra has organised its own subscription series of concerts that includes 6 symphonic concerts per year. It plays the standard repertoire avoiding the monumentally orchestrated pieces from the end of the 19th century.

Background

Established in 1949 on the initiative of composer and conductor Demetrij Žebre, the orchestra has worked with respected conductors such as Israel Yinon (Israel), Simone Fermani (Italy), Karen Kamensek and George Pehlivanian (USA) and with young Slovene soloists such as (Karmen Pečar, Mate Bekavac, Andreja Zakonjšek, Martin Belič and Anja Bukovec).

Founded as a society on June 11, 1993, only two years after Slovenia's independence, the orchestra began operating under the name Maribor Philharmonic (Mariborska filharmonija). As such they worked under the artistic supervision of Narodni dom Maribor, but in November 2004 the orchestra started to organize independent symphony concerts under the name of the SNG Maribor Symphony Orchestra. They cooperated with numerous renowned conductors (L. Schifrin) and soloists (P. D'Rivera). Their crowning project was the joint performance (together with the Slovene Philharmonic) of Mahler's Symphony of Thousands. In 2004 they ceased to work but they subscribed their own concert series as part of the production of the Slovene National Theatre Maribor.
