The concept for Via Negativa evolved out of a need to re-examine the ideas, meanings, and explanations that underpin theatrical production and out of the conviction that dominant production models and normative standards of making theatre had become a museum of historical aesthetic forms. The research has focused on methods of acting and forms of production within the thematic framework of the seven deadly sins (anger, gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, envy, pride), which resulted in seven performances: ''Starting Point: Anger'' [Izhodiščna točka: jeza] (2002), ''More'' [Še] (2003), ''Incasso'' (2005), which received a special jury award on 11th INFANT International Festival Novi Sad in 2005, ''Would Would Not'' [Bi ne bi] (2005), ''Viva Verdi'' (2006), ''Not Like Me'' [Ne kot jaz] (2007), ''Four Deaths'' [Štiri smrti] (2007), and ''Out'' (2008). Applying a method of reduction (no stage illusion and no drama text, stage set, costumes or stage technology, just the actor’s imagination and body, and the spectators' imagination and time), Jablanovec is above all interested in theatre as a principle of communication rather than aestheticisation.

Via Negativa is an international theatre research project established by the stage director Bojan Jablanovec in 2002. After completing the first cycle of performances that revolved around the seven deadly sins, a new series of performances, Via Nova, embarks on re-examining the boundaries between the performer and the spectator, theory and practice, reality and fiction, creation and destruction, and value and price. The performance-exhibition Via Nova Museum received the Audience Award for Best Performance at the 2009 edition of Eẋ Ponto International Festival.

The concept for Via Negativa evolved out of a need to re-examine the ideas, meanings, and explanations that underpin theatrical production and out of the conviction that dominant production models and normative standards of making theatre had become a museum of historical aesthetic forms. The research has focused on methods of acting and forms of production within the thematic framework of the seven deadly sins (anger, gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, envy, pride), which resulted in seven performances: Starting Point: Anger [Izhodiščna točka: jeza] (2002), More [Še] (2003), Incasso (2005), which received a special jury award on 11th INFANT International Festival Novi Sad in 2005, Would Would Not [Bi ne bi] (2005), Viva Verdi (2006), Not Like Me [Ne kot jaz] (2007), Four Deaths [Štiri smrti] (2007), and Out (2008). Applying a method of reduction (no stage illusion and no drama text, stage set, costumes or stage technology, just the actor’s imagination and body, and the spectators' imagination and time), Jablanovec is above all interested in theatre as a principle of communication rather than aestheticisation.

Via Nova is the name for the new cycle of Via Negativa performances. In this open-type project, eleven collaborators of Via Negativa created thirteen performances in 2009 which have been presented in different formats and contexts, among others, Spotlight On Me [Reflektor name], the lecture performance by the critic Blaž Lukan Erasing the Audience [Izbris občinstva], What Joseph Beuys Told Me [Kaj mi je povedal Joseph Beuys], and Buyer With an Eye [Kupec z žilico]. The latest Via Nova productions are presented at the newly built Mini Theatre in Ljubljana.

International co-operation

Jablanovec uses workshops to develop a model for the international production of contemporary theatre works that would not be driven by the logic of limiting the number of permanent members. Thus, the performances Out, Would Would Not, Viva Verdi, and Incasso included an international team of performers, while Out was produced in collaboration with University of Zagreb - Student Centre - Teatar &TD, Not Like Me in collaboration with Zalet Zadar and the International Festival of Contemporary Theatre Zadar Snova, and Viva Verdi in co-operation with Kampnagel, Hamburg, Eurokaz, Zagreb, and the Croatian National Theatre Opera in Zagreb. Via Negativa performances were presented at various international festivals, such as the Venice Biennial, Contemporary Drama Festival Budapest, International Festival Perforacije Dubrovnik, International Festival of New Theatre Eurokaz, Es.terni Festival - International Festival of Contemporary Creation, Desiree International Theatre Festival Subotica, Infant Festival, Mladi levi Festival, Exodos International Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, etc. Via Negativa performances are often co-produced by and presented at Glej Theatre, Ljubljana.
