Named after Rihard Jakopič (1869–1943), an important Slovene impressionist painter, the Rihard Jakopič Award is the highest award in the field of fine arts in Slovenia. Since 1969 it is bestowed annually to a Slovene artist, who lives and works in Slovenia or abroad, and is a member of the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies (ZDSLU). The artist is prized for his/her life opus or the artistic achievements of the last 5 years and receives remuneration and a solo exhibition in one of Ljubljana's esteemed galleries.

Candidates may be nominated by a cultural institution, by a fine arts association, by the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), by the Ministry of Culture, or by an individual.

The winner is selected by a special board consisting each year of new members from four institutions (two from each): Museum of Modern Art, Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies (ZDSLU), and the Association of Slovene Art Critics.
