Formally organised since 1998, Ana Desetnica International Street Theatre Festival is an annual festival organised by the Ana Monró Theatre. Held at the beginning of summer (mainly) in Ljubljana, the festival offers different street art genres and other performances (theatre, dance) by numerous artists. The festival's popularity among the people of Ljubljana has also grown steadily: in 2009 over 70 events were seen by some 30,000 spectators, 75 % of whom are under 35 years of age. Ana Monró Theatre also organises two winter festivals in December (Ana Plamenita and Ana Mraz).

Programme and locations

The festival takes place in Ljubljana but also presents individual works in other Slovene cities including Kranj, Nova Gorica, Celje, Vrhnika, Novo mesto, Kamnik, Grosuplje. Since 1996, part of the festival's programme also appears at Lent Festival in Maribor. The programme seeks to present various genres, styles, forms and contents of street theatre art, and includes everything from small individual acts to large-scale performances, from programmes for children to provocative shows for adults, from pantomime to illusions, from street music to contemporary dance, from visual acts to narratives, from drama to humour, and from circus skills to pyrotechnics, which attract a wide range of audience groups. Of the 250 to 400 artists who participate in the festival, 60 % are international guests who travel short and long distances from their countries to perform in Slovenia.

The 2009 festival presented over 70 performances at various venues in the Ljubljana city centre. The programme hosted several domestic and foreign street theatre groups and artists. The opening day presented a performance by Circus Kansky at Park Argentina, where a tent was set up where a number of workshops, performances, and a bazaar were held. The programme included also a magnificent procession of the French group Malabar, a pyrotechnic/water show by the German Baengditos, several productions of Ana Monró Theatre, the French Les Goulus, the international project H2O by the German Antagon, a performance by the Bulgarian Plovdiv Drama Theatre, an event organised by the Association of Puppeteers, and a miniature by Jaap Slagman. The MachinA programme, an education programme led by Ana Monró Theatre, presented a selection of the youngest Slovene street theatre groups, some of the shows were premières. The festival also offered performances from Kyrgyzstan, India, Italy, Argentina, and the Netherlands. It concluded with a Feast Poljane that included street art performances, presentations of the local community, and an international procession Light-Luce.

Ana Mraz and Ana Plamenita

Ana Monró Theatre organises performances and other street art related events also during the winter holiday season. In the frame of Ana Mraz (in English: Ana Frost) it presents its newest productions in the Ljubljana city centre just before New Year's, and also invites different domestic and international groups and authors. In 2009, the events were held at the Shoemaker's Bridge and were co-organised with the Ljubljana Tourist Board, offering performances by the dancers Jurij Konjar and Katjuša Kovačič, a circus performance by Frateli Probankini (Cro/Slo), a show by the French Benjamin Delams, and others.

In December 2009, Ana Monró Theatre launched the festival Ana Plamenita (in English: Ana Blaze), within which it organised an international workshop of fire decoration with the Belgian artists Gust Van der Krieken, in co-operation with the Slovene Voluntariat, which is part of the organisation Service Civil International (SCI). The participants from Spain, Russia, Serbia, Hungary, Finland, Germany, and Taiwan prepared fire sculptures, fire installations, and a torch procession to the Ljubljana Castle.

International cooperation

Ana Desetnica has been involved in several international networking and co-production projects at the European level, through its participation in the projects Eunetstar (European Network Street Arts Project 2003-2006), Circostrada and Meridians, whose combined member organisations represent over 20 countries.

Through Ana Desetnica Festival, numerous street theatre productions have had the opportunity to tour abroad, including the Slovene groups Grejpfrut (UK), The Stroj (UK), Ana Monró Theatre (AT, BE, DE, IT, NL, PL, UK) and other groups like Mr. Pejo's Wandering Dolls from Russia (IT, BE), Senmaru from Japan (UK), Makadam Piano from France (HR), Makadam Kanibal from France (HR), Bike Boy from Australia (AT), Teater Kvelb from Czech Republic (NL)).

The Artistic Director of Ana Desetnica Festival, Goro Osojnik, is regularly invited to represent the festival throughout Europe by serving on artistic juries, lecturing at events, and sharing his knowledge and expertise of the field and the artistic genre of street theatre.
