Exhibitions
Focused on the contemporary photography of Slovene and other photographers of CEE regions, the Photon Gallery prepares approximately one exhibition monthly. The Gallery features plenty of solo exhibitions. Recently the Gallery exhibited works of young Slovene artist Špela Volčič, the representative of the new wave photography Vanja Bučan, but also work of Tomo Brejc, photographer of middle generation, known also for the cooperation with Irwin. Each year the Gallery presents also artist of older, classical Slovene photography; in 2009 the gallery featured the series entitled Vanishing of Janez Korošin.
Beside solo exhibitions, is Photon Gallery known also for its themed group shows like Early 80s Music Scene, Laibach-Focus or Contemporary Erotic Photography, which was prepared in the cooperation with Primož Lampič, the head of the photography department of the Architecture Museum of Ljubljana. The exhibition in 2008 featured also works of Goran Bertok, Matjaž Prešeren, Jure Breceljnik, Voranc Vogel, Rajko Bizjak, and of tandem Barbara Jakše and Stane Jeršič.
Moreover, the nudity is the theme often present in the programme of the Photon Gallery. In 2007 the Photon Gallery for the first time introduced to Slovene public the work of the notorious Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki with the selection from his Pola Eros series. Recently the Gallery featured also photographies of French artists Enna Chaton or Italian photrographer Luca Donnini, whose works expresses the unusual presence of a highly involved voyeur – both solo exhibitions were featured in 2009, the last one within the programme of the Red Dawn International Women's Festival in the Autonomous Cultural Centre Metelkova mesto in Ljubljana.
The Gallery intensively cooperates with national and international institutions. In the summer of 2009 it was featuring as well the group exhibition Camera Obscura – Autoportrait of the Students of Photography from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design. In the collaboration with Nessim Gallery from Budapest the Gallery presented in the beginning of 2010 a renowned Hungarian contemporary photo artist Gabor Kerekes with the series Over Roswell and a selection of other works.
Ljubljana Month of Photography and Photonic Moments
Inspired by events that have been happening in 2004 in the number of European cities under the name European Month of Photography, the Photon Gallery initiated 2005 the Month of Photography in Ljubljana. Each year the event focuses on presenting contemporary trends in the photography of Slovenia and other countries in the region. The 2006 programme involved a total of almost 20 exhibitions and accompanying events in Slovenia capital. In last three editions, the Month of Photography encompassed a yearly average of 30 exhibitions as well as related events, such as symposium entitled Discussions on Contemporary Photography etc. Within the event the »Photo Exhibition of the Year« award is granted.
The most significant annual production project of Photon Gallery is the exhibition entitled Photonic Moments, which shows selected works of young and emerging artists from Middle and Southeastern European region. In 2006, Photonic Moments became the official exhibition of the Month of Photography festival. As a representative exhibition of the festival, the Photonic Moments tours every year throughout Europe. The fourth edition in 2008 gathered artists from 6 countries (Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia and Turkey) including Primož Bizjak, Maša Bajc, Ektor Dimissianos, Marko Ercegović, Valentino Bilić Prcić, Špela Volčič and others.
