Established as early as 1851, Mohor's Society (in Slovenian Mohorjeva družba) is the oldest publishing house in Slovenia. It operates in Celje and Ljubljana, where two bookstores are located as well. The publishing house was founded on the initiative of Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek (1800–1862) in Klagenfurt (present-day Austria). As a result of historical and political shifts, Mohorjeva družba relocated to Celje, while two additional branches were established in Gorizia, Italy, and Klagenfurt. Today all three branches remain active.

Publishing programme

Comprising the publishing programme of Mohorjeva družba are literature for children and adults, fiction in translation, textbooks, and expert literature and handbooks covering a wide array of areas. Through the years several acclaimed and prize-winning authors and have collaborated with the publishing house, including Tone Pavček, Alojz Rebula, and Bina Štampe Žmavc.

Of unique renown and historical importance is the company's regular collection, which, especially in the past, helped form Slovene cultural awareness, be it at home or with emigrants abroad. The collection features a selection of five books for all ages and tastes and the traditional calendar of Mohor’s Society, which chronicles all of the previous year’s significant events, both domestic and foreign, in addition to containing articles, discussions, poetry, and short fiction.

Zvon [Bell] is a bimonthly magazine, the origins of which go back to 1870, making it the oldest cultural publication in Slovenia. Published by Celjska Mohorjeva družba since 2006, it affords its readers a variety of artistic and expert contributions, interviews, discussions, and reviews.

Other activities

Launches of new titles are often accompanied with author presentations. Workshops, round tables, cultural and educational events, and expert meetings are likewise organised by the publishing house. The Slomšek Reading Award (Slomškovo bralno priznanje) strives to stimulate reader interest among primary school pupils. The project concludes with a gathering in Ponikva, the birthplace of Anton Martin Slomšek.
