Founded in December 1995 as a Slovene branch of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music (IASPM), the IASPM Slovenia now has 20 members whose intellectual profiles range from sociology, ethnomusicology, ethnology and philosophy to music journalism and criticism. Most of its members have been actively involved in either publishing or broadcasting articles, books and translations related to various aspects of popular music and culture. In March 1998, the Society for the Study of Popular Music was registered in accordance with Slovene legislation.

Activities and projects

Its main activities concern: the Balkan Popular Music Conference, held in Ljubljana in November 1996 and the Popular Music and National Culture Conference held in Ljubljana in 2000; the archival CD series Arhefon of Slovene popular and other music; a series of lectures by its members and guest lecturers, the last was held on February 2010 by Anthony McCann on the topic of copyright controversy in Ireland.

In May 2010, the society founded an internet music magazine NovaMuska.org (roughly transliterated as: "Nu Muzik"), built on the ashes of the defunct bi-monthly music magazine Muska, previously published by Glasbena mladina Slovenije.
