The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Skopje is the official representative body of the Slovenian Government in the Republic of Macedonia. The embassy maintains and strengthens the relations and contacts with Macedonian state institutions and their high representatives and promotes cooperation and bilateral political, economic and cultural relations between Slovenia and Macedonia. Together with the Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia in Bitola it provides also consular assistance.

Cultural cooperation

The legal basis for cooperation in the field of culture is the Agreement on Cooperation in Culture, Education and Science between the Republic of Slovenia and the Republic of Macedonia signed in July 1993 in Ljubljana.

In 2010 the Programme of Cooperation in the Field of Culture for the years 2010–2013 was signed in Skopje by the two ministers of culture. On the occasion the exhibition Jože Plečnik (1872-1957). Architect in Ljubljana, Prague and Vienna and the Modern Architecture in Slovenia 1999–2010 were featured as a part of the 15th architectural biennial of Macedonia BIMAS 2010.

The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Skopje participates in organisation of a range of cultural events. In 2010 several literary evenings (Mitja Čander and Lucija Stupica, Primož Repar, Josip Osti), choir singing and folklore events, exhibitions (NAME Readymade produced by Aksioma Institute) took place in Macedonia, while Slovene artists presented themselves at several festivals: Anja Medved's video installation was shown at the Skopsko leto and two young Slovenian filmmakers were awarded at the Roma film festival Zlato kolo Skopje and the Asterfest film festival. The performances by the Mladinsko Theatre, Glej Theatre and Slovene National Theatre Drama Ljubljana were invited to the MOT International Theatre Festival, while the Skupifestival 2010 hosted the Ma & Al by Mini Theatre.

Slovenian community in Macedonia

Around 500 Slovenes live in Macedonia. In 1994 the non-governmental Slovenian Association France Prešeren was founded in Skopje (it has 160 members from all over Macedonia), while in Bitola in 2007 the Slovenian Association Triglav was established. Both are supported by the Government Office for Slovenians Abroad. The associations organise classes of Slovenian language and culture in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Sport and the Macedonian Government that assists with the space. In the academic year 2007/2008 for the first time 14 students were enrolled in the Slovenian language modul as a part of the Bologna programme of the Philology Faculty Blaže Koneski, University of St. Ciril and Metodius in Skopje. An anthology of Slovene contemporary literature was published in cooperation with the Centre for Slovene as a Second/Foreign Language and the Department of Slovenian Studies, University of Ljubljana.
