Sonica International Festival of Transitory Art

Sonica is a festival of (electronic) music as well as sound and experimental art. In a way, it is conceived as a showcase of the annual programme produced by the hyperactive MoTA Museum of Transitory Art. Its experimental nature questions exhibition and staging formats, crossing borders between art and theory, object and performance. Sonica was launched in the year 2009.

In the past, Sonica has presented artists like Tim Hecker, Rashad Becker, Emptyset, Marina Rosenfeld, Herman Kolgen, Ryoichi Kurokawa and Random Logic.

European Capital of Culture

Nova Gorica–Gorizia, European Capital of Culture 2025

Since its inception in 1985, over 40 cities have won the prestigious European Capital of Culture (ECoC) title. Forty years later, however, the border cities of Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy are the first ones to turn this annual celebration of culture into a genuinely cross-border endeavour. Based on these cities' specific political, cultural and geographical context, their 2025 ECoC programme explores the concept of borders from multiple dimensions under the slogan “Go! Borderless”.

The opening event, From Station to Station, was held on 8 February, the Slovenian cultural holiday.

First Slovenian comedy play: "The Mayor's Micka" by Anton Tomaž Linhart, directed by Vito Taufer with costumes by Alan Hranitelj and music score by Ilija Ota. Produced by Slovene Permanent Theatre in Trieste. Linhart's adaptation of the 1789 comedy is set in the 1950s, the production uses multilingualism and diverse characters to highlight the Mediterranean cultural environment, while preserving Linhart's witty writing, which remains relevant and lively even today.
