Founded in 1945 as the Academy of Acting Arts, the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT) (renamed in 1963) has been running the Department of Dramaturgy, Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT) since its inception. The department offers courses in theory, aesthetics and the history of drama, theatre and audio-visual media.

The theoretical courses and seminars are combined with training in practical dramaturgy, playwriting and screenwriting. The students participate in the regular semestral theatre and film/TV production within the Academy.

Since 2008 the department publishes the Amfiteater Journal of Performing Arts Theory in collaboration with the Association of Theatre Critics and Researchers of Slovenia.
