Founded in Established::1996 by Boštjan Vuga and Jurij Sadar, SADAR + VUGA Architects focuses on open, innovative and integral architectural design and urban planning. Its growing portfolio of built work ranges from town planning to public space sculpture, from interactive new public buildings to interventions within older existing structures.

Never shy of making bold architectural statements, SADAR + VUGA is among the most  visible architecture offices in Slovenia. Founded in Established::1996 by Boštjan Vuga and Jurij Sadar, they have had quite an impact in the built landscape (especially in the city of Ljubljana) as well as in the public discourse surrounding architecture. They've earned themselves substantial international limelight, with their projects standing (or are getting realised) in several states across Europe.

The company's client base reflects the diversity of its built and project experience, encompassing national and private arts bodies as well as multinationals. Its most-acknowledged buildings include the building of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (GZS) in Ljubljana, which received the Piranesi Award in 1999.

The bureau is usually simultaneously preoccupied by large scale projects – such as the renovation of the Slovenska Boulevard in Ljubljana and the Sports Park Stožice – as well by interior design and smaller housing enterprises. Either way, there is always a sense of complexity in their charismatic visual language.

Background
Some of the major projects by SADAR + VUGA Architects span from the the Central part of the National Gallery of Slovenia (2001) in Ljubljana, and Mercator Shopping Centre in Nova Gorica to recently completed projects, which include residential buildings - Condominium Trnovski Pristan and the Gradaška Apartment House - which contributed to high quality urban living on the edge of Ljubljana city centre. For the project Villa Beli Križ in Portorož the studio received the Golden Pencil Award in 2009, awarded by the Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning of Slovenia (ZAPS) to the most notable projects of the past year.

Among most recent projects are the Sports Park Stožice in Ljubljana (2010), at the time one of the biggest construction sites in Slovenia; and the Air Traffic Control Centre at the Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport in Brnik, Slovenia.
+
Jurij Sadar and Boštjan Vuga both graduated at the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana during the 1980s, with Vuga subsequently undertaking postgraduate studies at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. He received the Student Plečnik Award in 1992, the same year when Sadar received (his first) Piranesi Award. In 1994 Vuga co-founded OCEAN, a still operating trans-national network of architects, urban planners and designers.

The duo established the bureau after winning open calls for two of their most well known projects – a rather thorough refurbishment of the National Gallery of Slovenia and the erection of new headquarters for the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia (GZS).
Jurij Sadar graduated from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana in 1987 and subsequently worked there from 1993–1997 as Assistant Professor. His design for the Kotnikova apartment building won the Piranesi Award in 1992. Boštjan Vuga also graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana in 1982 and undertook postgraduate studies at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. He subsequently received the Student Plečnik Award in 1992. He is one of the founders of OCEAN, a trans-national network of architects, urban planners and designers.

Architectural philosophy
Jurij Sadar and Boštjan Vuga are constantly holding lectures; they have staged many exhibitions as well. Several books and catalogues have been published. With the collection of their own realisations and of urban planning studies presented in Formula New Ljubljana the architects are now also intervening in the political process.
+
Sadar+Vuga state their works to be "intentionally imperfect and awkward, robust, and ambiguous, intentionally incoherent and contradictory, where a single architectural project can be described as both monumental and informal at the same time". Aspiring to systematically produce innovative concepts they often opt for an audacious use of materials and colours, sometimes venturing into – as they say – an "expressive heaviness".

Philosophy
+
Thus the bureau strives not only to create visually challenging landmarks but also to open up public debates. In fact, the office established a certain transparency in their communication with both the public and the investors. However, Boštjan Vuga and Jurij Sadar are also interested in other aspects of architecture: in presenting their work through public appearances, international exhibitions, lectures and symposia. Both also teach at architecture schools (at TU Graz and the Faculty of Architecture in Ljubljana, respectively).

The studio is interested in architectural phenomena through experiences, emotions and atmosphere. They believe that the architectural product can influence its use, its visitors and its inhabitants providing new experience for new identification.
+
Additionally, the architects also try to intervene in the political process, as for example with the collection of their own realisations and of urban planning studies presented in the book Formula New Ljubljana (Actar, 2006) and later with the Sports Park Stožice: Possible futures (2016). The latter is offering possible visions of the entire Sports Park Stožice complex, now for many years an unfinished construction ground. The ideas are a product of an international student workshop, done with students from

Münster School of Architecture, University of Applied, Sciences (MSA), the Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana and the Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Landscape Architecture, University of Ljubljana.

Formulas state concepts is the graphic outline of main ideas or characteristics, applied to SVA architectural products. They use them as the communicational tool in the office through the working process, in discussions with the client and presentations to the public. More than one project can be defined by one formula, and one project can also consist of several formulas for they exist regardless of typologies, program, location, site and any other parameters that bring out the features of the specific architectural product.

Reflections
The studio has won numerous awards, ones of greater importance are the Marcus Prize for Architecture (Milwaukee, USA, 2007) ; ECCS Steel Design Award in 2003 and 2001, and Bauwelt Prize granted in Berlin, Germany in 2001.
+
Apart from all this they also consciously (self)historicize their work, letting it be critically reflected not only in catalogues but also in books (The Designers Republic's Adventures In & Out of Architecture (L. King Publishing, 2001), Tendencies (Design Document Series 17, DAMDI, 2006), and Sadar+Vuga: A Review (Hatje Cantz, 2012) as well as in a film-essay, released in 2017 and directed by Damjan Kozole, of Vertigo production studio.

SADAR + VUGA Architects were nominated for the prestigious Mies Van Der Rohe Award in 2001, 2003, and 2009, and for the Iakov Chernikhov International Prize (Moscow, Russia) in 2008. In 2008 the SVA studio was shortlisted at the World Architecture Festival taking place in Barcelona, Spain.

Never shy of making bold architectural statements, SADAR + VUGA is among the most visible architecture offices in Slovenia. Founded in 1996 by Boštjan Vuga and Jurij Sadar, they have had quite an impact in the built landscape (especially in the city of Ljubljana) as well as in the public discourse surrounding architecture. They've earned themselves substantial international limelight, with their projects standing (or are getting realised) in several states across Europe.

Background

Zajec was commissioned to make a sculpture of a poet France Prešeren for the central square in Ljubljana, unveiled in 1905.

Architectural philosophy

Sadar+Vuga state their works to be "intentionally imperfect and awkward, robust, and ambiguous, intentionally incoherent and contradictory, where a single architectural project can be described as both monumental and informal at the same time". Aspiring to systematically produce innovative concepts they often opt for an audacious use of materials and colours, sometimes venturing into – as they say – an "expressive heaviness".

The latter is offering possible visions of the entire Sports Park Stožice complex, now for many years an unfinished construction ground. The ideas are a product of an international student workshop, done with students from Münster School of Architecture, University of Applied, Sciences (MSA), the Ljubljana FAculty of Architecture, University of Ljubljana and the Biotechnical Faculty, Department of Landscape Architecture, University of Ljubljana.
