Launched in established::2014, Film Mixer Independent Film Festival is presenting independent film productions from all over the world. It is situated in Kranj, a regional capitol without any art cinema venues and therefore a very appropriate place for setting this up. The main venues are the courtyard of the Layer House and the neighbouring multimedia centre Škrlovec Tower, which are coupled by a few additional venues throughout the city – the Kranj City Library, the Khislstein Castle and the Vovkov vrt, a small park along the old city wall where the Layer House sometimes also sets up occasional film screenings.

Conceptually, the festival addresses the rich multitude of contemporary film production that is systematically ignored by the multiplex cinema and TV programme infrastructure, but is nevertheless accessible and relevant. Alongside its main, internationally set up programme, Film Mixer also deals with local and regional film "scenes" and presents the works of various less established authors.

Launched in 2014, the Film Mixer Independent Film Festival presents independent film productions from all over the world. It takes place in Kranj, a regional capital without any art cinema venues and therefore a much needed initiative in the city. The main venues are the courtyard of the Layer House and the neighbouring multimedia centre Škrlovec Tower, which are coupled by a few additional venues throughout the city – the Kranj City Library, the Khislstein Castle and Vovkov vrt, a small park along the old city wall where the Layer House sometimes also sets up occasional film screenings.

Conceptually, the festival addresses the rich multitude of contemporary film production that is systematically ignored by the multiplex cinema and TV programme infrastructure, but is nevertheless accessible and relevant. Alongside its main, internationally focused programme, Film Mixer also deals with local and regional film "scenes" and presents the works of various less-established authors.

Besides the actual films, there are also round table discussions (for example, on alternative film funding methods and with guest artists), workshops on various related skills, select music video presentations, music concerts, etc.

Film selection

The festival lasts for only three days (with an additional pre-event) and has a rather limited budget, so the number of presented feature movies still hovers around ten. Some previously screened films include Before Sunset (Richard Linklater, US, 2004), Drinking Buddies (Joe Swanberg, US, 2013), Hungry Man (Philip Martin, FR, 2013), Narco Cultura (Shaul Schwartz, MX, 2013), Submarine (Richard Ayoade, UK, 2010), Tea Time (Maite Alberdi, CL, 2014) and What a Wonderful World (Anatol Durbală, MD, 2015).

Alongside these, short movies represent another important festival feature and are usually screened in collaboration with other festivals and institutions.

Collaborations

While the current Slovenian short film production is covered by the Kraken Film Society (which otherwise organises the film festival FeKK), a more international programme is done in cooperation with the Croatian Tabor Film Festival and the Austrian K3 International Short Film Festival, presenting the best short films of the respective festivals. A selection of films made at the movie-making marathon MUVIT/6×60 is also presented.

Another collaboration is the Odprto platno (Open Canvas) project, which is organised together with KUD SubArt and Legit Films and is basically a public call for movies on certain given topics.

Additionally, there is a showcase of the most imaginative Slovenian music videos, curated by the web-portal Podoba-Glasba.si. In presenting a programme of animated features, Film Mixer also collaborates with Animateka International Animated Film Festival.
