Predjama Castle

Predjama Castle 2006 medieval tournament.JPGPredjama Castle, annual medieval tournament, 2006

One of the most picturesque castles in Slovenia, Predjama Castle is built into an overhanging rock in front of a karst cave hall that is connected with a cave system underneath the castle. It is situated just a a few kilometres from the entrance to the Postojna Cave. The castle is now a museum on five floors that shows the life in the 16th century, with an armoury, dungeon, halls, living quarters and other castle facilities. Interesting is the dialogue between man-made architecture and natural structures that combine into the castle's fortification system.

The Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival is a specialised competitive festival focusing on contemporary genre film production, mostly on those of horror and fantasy films. It was launched in 2005 on the 100th anniversary of Slovene cinema and is dedicated to Dr. Karol Grossmann (1864–1929), the pioneer of Slovene cinema who made the first film shots in 1905. The Festival takes place annually in July in different locations in the city of Ljutomer and was named one of the "30 Bloody Best Genre Fests in the World", according to MovieMaker Magazine. The call for eligible films is usually open from January till May. The 2020 edition is held in Ormož (10-12.7.), then in Ljutomer (14-18.7.).

2 Reels - Association for Reanimation of Storytelling

The 2 Reels - Association for Reanimation of Storytelling was born in 2007 out of the wish to cultivate and to promote storytelling in all its forms. It brings together two spheres of activity bound by their mutual aim to cultivate the telling of stories: Animateka International Animated Film Festival and the Radio Student programme Za 2 groša fantazije ("A Twopence of Imagination"). A significant part of the association's activities is dedicated to educational programmes for adults and children, as stories – be they in the form of film, written word, sound recording or live storytelling – should come to life and live on among people.

Established in 1993, the Celje Gallery of Contemporary Art is situated on the outskirts of the old town centre and is part of the architectural complex of buildings that once formed the foothill castle of the Counts of Celje. Since 2005 it is managed by the Celeia Celje Institute - Centre for Contemporary Arts as its principal exhibition space. Annually the venue hosts up to 10 exhibitions addressing specific themes or offering a thorough monographic presentation of individual artistic positions. The exhibitions are usually prepared by the house curators although the Centre for Contemporary Arts also collaborates with foreign experts and offers a working platform for guest curators through its artist-in-residence programme AiR Celeia Celje.

World of Art: School for Contemporary Arts

World of Art School for Contemporary Arts 2009 World of Art anthologies.jpgWorld of Art anthologies

Run by the SCCA-Ljubljana Centre for Contemporary Arts since 1997, the annual World of Art: School for Contemporary Arts [Svet umetnosti] is the sole programme in Slovenia and a pioneering one in the broader region of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe which offers practical and theoretical education in the field of contemporary art.

The annual programme comprises two semesters, the first one is more theory oriented, the second one is practical and is dedicated to the conceptualisation and realisation of a student-curated exhibition of contemporary art under the guidance of the programme tutors. The exhibition is also accompanied by a catalogue including texts written by the students.

Snežnik Castle Museum

Sneznik Castle 2010 exterior Photo Anja Premk (2).JPGSnežnik Castle, being the only Slovene Castle with genuine furnished interiors, came under the administration of the National Museum of Slovenia after its restoration in 2008.

The earliest record of Snežnik Castle dates from 1269 when it was owned by the patriarchs of Aquileia. The castle lies on a strategic site, on the edge of the Lož Valley under the Snežnik mountains surrounded by a beautiful park and vast forests with diverse and rich flora and fauna including big game ranging from bears, boars, wolves and lynxes, to wild fowl and deer, and was always favourite hunting residence. Throughout the centuries the castle has changed owners many times, but in 1853 the castle and associated forests of Snežnik were bought by German Prince Otto Viktor Schönburg-Waldenburg, who gave it to his third son Georg. Thereafter it remained in the Schönburg-Waldenburg family until 1945. The last caretaker Leon Schauta saved Snežnik Castle from destruction after the Second World War by keeping good relations with the locals before and after the war. Restoration began in the 1960s and the castle opened to the public in 1970/71. In 1983 two additional exhibition rooms were opened. After a restoration completed in 2008, the romantic state-owned castle came under the administration of the National Museum of Slovenia and is the only Slovene Castle with genuine furnished interiors.

Since 2014 the Floating Castle Festival has embedded into the picturesque surroundings of the castle the late summer "folk-puppet-music-theatre site-specific event".

The National Gallery of Slovenia (Narodna galerija) is the main art museum in Slovenia that holds the country's largest fine art collection from the late medieval period up to the early twentieth century. It was founded as early as 1918 as the National Gallery Society with the aim of establishing a museum for Slovenian fine arts. First housed in the Kresija Palace, the Gallery relocated to the Narodni dom palace in 1926.

A completely reorganised and expanded permanent exhibition of the collections returned to public view in January 2016, following an extensive renovation of the Narodni dom palace.
