Formally organised already in 1902 as a Dramatic Society, the theatre staged in its initial period of continual activity (until 1920) 245 dramatic works, including world classics and original Slovene works, and 19 performances in the opera and ballet programme. In 1920 the theatre's building was burnt down by the fascists, which interrupted the theatre's activity for the following 25 years. In 1945 the theatre was re-founded as permanent and professional and has since then staged over 450 dramatic, opera, and ballet works. In 1964 Slovene Permanent Theatre in Trieste was officially acknowledged by the Italian state, becoming one of its permanent theatres.

Established in 1945 as a professional and permanent theatre, the Slovene Permanent Theatre in Trieste is one of the eight theatres in Italy with a status of 'teatro stabile'. With an ensemble of seven actors, the theatre produces 5 premières per year, often staging works that intertwine the cultural specificities of the Slovene and Italian community, thus strengthening the theatre's role as a cultural mediator between the two cultures.

    History

Formally organised already in 1902 as a Dramatic Society, the theatre staged in its initial period of continual activity (until 1920) 245 dramatic works, including world classics and original Slovene works, and 19 performances in the opera and ballet programme. In 1920 the theatre's building was burnt down by the fascists, which interrupted the theatre's activity for the following 25 years. In 1945 the theatre was re-founded as permanent and professional and has since then staged over 450 dramatic, opera, and ballet works. In 1964 Slovene Permanent Theatre in Trieste finally got its own space in the Cultural Home in Trieste (architect Edo Mihevc) and was in the same year also officially acknowledged by the Italian state, becoming one of its permanent theatres.

    Programme

To meet the demands of a very heterogeneous audience of the Trieste area, the theatre's programme covers a wide range of theatre genres, from light comedies and parodies to more demanding dramatic works, and guest appearances of Slovene theatres. Recently, the theatre aims to attract also the Italian speaking community and has consequently strengthened its connections with Italian theatres and offered a season ticket programme with Italian subtitling.

The theatre collaborates with many established Slovene theatre directors, such as Diego de Brea, Janusz Kica, Vito Taufer, Eduard Miler, Samo M. Strelec, Matjaž Latin, Ivica Buljan, etc. and often collaborates in co-production with different Slovene theatres. In 2008 the theatre entered into a co-production with Mladinsko Theatre, Slovene National Theatre Maribor, and Cankarjev dom, Cultural and Congress Centre to produce William Shakespeare's The Tempest [Vihar], directed by Vito Taufer, and in 2006 it co-produced with Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica the well-received music theatre spectacle The Bacchae [Bakhantke] by Euripides, directed by Vito Taufer and choreographed by Matjaž Farič, which featured the ensembles of both theatres and a number of pop singers.

A children's and youth programme is offered, including own productions and guest performances.
