Established in 1974, the 22-member Maribor Puppet Theatre is a repertory theatre, staging mainly new works from contemporary Slovene children's and youth literature. The company performs at its own venue, gives performances around Slovenia, and undertakes foreign tours. Since 1990, the theatre organises the Summer Pier International Puppetry Festival in Maribor and has also hosted several editions of Slovene Puppetry Biennial. It is engaged in extensive collaboration with festival partners all over Slovenia as well as in Austria and Italy. In late 2010 the theatre moved in the reconstructed former Minorite convent on the bank of the Drava river. With the 2500 m2 and two stages (320 seats) it became the largest puppet theatre in Slovenia.

Programme

The theatre produces four new shows each year involving more than 400 performances, among them educational performances for schools and language institutes (it also performs in German, English, and Spanish). Its programme is intended mainly to children, including classical texts but focusing on adaptations of Slovene children's literature, which are revived in all puppetry techniques. It also collaborates with theatre directors, such as Jernej Lorenci, who directed the 2006 adaptation of Pinocchio [Ostržek], which received a special award for visual concept at the Slovene Puppetry Biennial, Ivana Djilas, who directed Maya the Bee [Čebelica Maja] (2008), etc. It has also collaborated with Slovene National Theatre Maribor in the production of King Matjaž [Kralj Matjaž] (2008), based on a national myth about a king who lived in the 14th century.

The theatre is often awarded at festivals, such as the Summer Pier International Puppetry Festival, Mini Summer - International Festival for Children, Slovene Puppetry Biennial, and appears at international festivals, such as the Austrian Puppet Festival ANIMA, the Festival of Puppet Theatres in Rijeka (HR), etc.
