Background
Studio Maj debuted in 1989 with the six-hour mini-series The Betrothed, a Slovene-Italian co-production for RAI TV directed by Salvatore Nocita, followed by the film Maria Struggles with the Angels, also produced for RAI TV. In 1992 it served as line and executive producer of the short films The American Dream and Bau Bau, and from 1996 to 1997 it produced a children's television series by Mirza Idrizović titled Animal Tales. The 1998 The Truths About Wine, a nine-episode series about viticulture and wine drinking culture, marks the beginning of the studio's documentary film production.
Film production
The studio has collaborated with Casablanca Productions on a number of occasions, such as in 1999 when it was the line and executive producer of the short film Janez Puhar's Missing Formula [Izgubljena formula Janeza Puharja] by Pavel Grzinčič. In 2000 it acted as the co-producer and executive producer of the French-Belgian-Italian-UK-Slovene co-production No Man's Land [Nikogaršnja zemlja], the Academy Award-, Golden Globe Award- and European Film Academy Award-winning film by Danis Tanović.
Studio Maj was the co-producer of the 2001 French-Greek-Slovene co-production Lily's Story [Ljiljina zgodba] by Robert Manthoulis, and it was the producer and executive producer of Danis Tanović's 2002 short film 11–09–01, produced with Galatee Films and Studio Canal. In 2002 it co-produced the docu-fiction short film It flies ... It flies ... It flies ... Woman? [Leti ... leti ... leti ... ženska?] by Polona Sepe, and in 2003 the animated series The Buffons [Bizgeci] by Grega Mastnak in collaboration with Bad Movies, Greece and RTV Slovenia.
In 2005 the studio and Casablanca Productions co-produced Well Tempered Corpses by Benjamin Filipović with Flash Productions Sarajevo, ASAP Films of Paris, Cinemark France, and Sintra film, Rome. The same year, Studio Maj produced the feature film Warchild [Izginuli] with Christian Wagner Film, Munich. The 2006 feature film Tea written and directed by Hanna Slak was co-produced with Gustav Film, Jadran film Zagreb, and SPI International, Warsaw.
