The Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Ljubljana - Drama is one of the nine professional repertoire theatres in Slovenia and at the same time the oldest of the three theatres founded by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. With its formal status as a national statutory institution, SNG Drama Ljubljana has been declared heir to the noble tradition of the Slovene Dramatic Society which staged the first performance in the Slovene language in the premises of the Ljubljana Reading Society on 24 October 1867. This Society subsequently became the Provincial Theatre in Ljubljana and was renamed the National Theatre in Ljubljana in 1892. It acquired its current name Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Ljubljana - Drama after World War II. According to the Slovene Theatre Annual for the season 2005-2006 SNG Drama Ljubljana prepared 10 new productions, on both its main and small stages. In that season a total of 418 performances were attended by over 101,898 visitors. In that season too SNG Drama Ljubljana's programme included 17 productions from previous seasons. Thus the production of six Slovene texts and 21 distinguished contemporary plays from abroad could be seen on stage. In recent seasons the ensemble has also successfully participated in international festivals in Germany, Sweden, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, South Korea, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Austria, Serbia and Montenegro, Hungary and Slovakia. In 2005-2006 season there were 111 presentations, either in-country or abroad. In 1996 SNG Drama Ljubljana became a full member of the European Theatre Convention (ETC).

In the 2007-2008 season SNG Drama Ljubljana presented on its main stage texts by Dane Zajc and Andrej Hieng, Tennessee Williams, Heinrich von Kleist (directed by François-Michel Pesenti), William Shakespeare and Mihail A Bulgakov. On its small stage the programme comprised productions based on texts by Julian Barnes, Yasmina Reza (directed by Janusz Kica), Harold Pinter, Yukio Mishima (directed by Ivica Buljan), Brian Friel and Dušan Jovanović.
