Slovenia's national public broadcasting organisation Radio-Television Slovenia (RTV Slovenia or RTVS) is public legal entity with a head office in Ljubljana and two regional broadcasting centres in Koper-Capodistria and Maribor respectively.

In 2008 RTV Slovenia celebrates the 80th anniversary of Radio Slovenia (its forerunner Radio Ljubljana was established in 1928) and the 50th anniversary of Televizija Slovenija (regular television broadcasting commenced in 1958). Past milestones include the opening of a new RTV centre with four television studios in 1975, the first teletext transmission in 1984, the launch of digitisation in 1986, the launch of the first terrestrial satellite station (for EBU communications) in 1993 and the establishment of the first online services in 1995. Since 2001 satellite programmes have been broadcast from Domžale (a suburb of Ljubljana) and RTV Slovenia has rapidly expanded its online services, including real-time transmission of radio and TV programmes and a range of additional services - see RTV Slovenia Multimedia Centre.

RTV Slovenia is a public broadcasting service established by the Republic of Slovenia, and the legal foundation for its operations is the Law on RTV Slovenia, which was passed in November 2005. The law requires that the public service of RTV Slovenia includes creation, preparation, archiving and broadcasting of two nationwide TV channels, three nationwide radio channels, radio and TV programmes in the regional centres in Koper and Maribor, radio and TV channels for the Italian and Hungarian minorities in Slovenia, radio and TV programmes for the Romany community, radio and TV programmes for Slovene national minorities in the neighbouring countries and Slovene emigrants and workers abroad, and radio and TV programmes aimed at foreign audiences, plus teletex and an Internet and mobile portal. According to the Law, the public service of RTV Slovenia must also include a special national TV programme for the direct broadcasting of sessions of the National Assembly and its working bodies, and of sessions of the National Council. The recent Law on RTV Slovenia also specifies the management and supervision of RTV Slovenia

RTV Slovenia operates on the basis of a mixed financing scheme consisting of a licence fee and commercial revenue. The licence fee has to be paid by every owner of a radio or television receiver and the amount paid is determined by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia. The law binds RTV Slovenia to ensure that its output is high quality, informative, cultural, educational and entertaining, and fundamentally different to commercial programmes, as advertising time is restricted according to the EU regulations and the Public Media Act.

RTV Slovenia has a joint correspondents network abroad, with correspondent offices in Washington, Moscow, Brussels, Rome, Berlin, Zagreb, Belgrade and cross-border correspondent offices for the neighbouring regions in Italy and Austria. In addition to its regional centres it also maintains correspondent offices in all regions and major towns of Slovenia. RTV Slovenia is an active member of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), of Circom Regional and of other international consortia and associations.
